Back in April, Los Angeles was visited by three representatives from the planet Kero Kero at the aptly titled Spaceland. The eX-Girl trio took the stage dressed up like cuter colorful versions of monsters from an Ultraman adventure then proceeded to greet the packed house with a pre-jam ritual of chants and motion before picking up their instruments. Then they blasted off with their space rock sound highlighted by infectious rhythms and kawaii vocals.
Fans of Osaka underground group Shonen Knife would really get a kick out of eX-Girl and from the looks of the older audience, most of them probably were weened on Shonen.
The girl band is the brainchild of Hoppy Kamiyama, a legend of the Japanese indie/underground scene. He produces and co-writes the music. Kamiyama formed the original group back in 1997 and the members have rotated since then. The performers that toured the U.S. this spring were Kirilola on guitar and vocals, Laan Zukoh on bass and vocals and Yoko on drums.
After the show I picked up the “Endangered Species” CD and got a picture with the eX-Girls and my friends. I left Spaceland an eX-Girl fan and can’t wait until they land back in our neighborhood again.
