The image of a geisha stands for refined beauty, traditional values and a rich culture. To many, the geisha is a symbol of Japan. But how much do you really know about geisha and their cloistered world?
Hannari - Geisha Modern takes you into the heart of Kyoto where the geisha carry on time-worn traditions despite the influences of the modern world. The director, Miyuki Sohara, once trained with the geisha and so has gained insider access that she brings to the screen. In this 94 minute film, we meet real geisha, young and old, and get a sense of the discipline and elegance they have mastered. We also meet the craftsmen and artists who complete the image, from the fan maker to the dance teachers. This unfiltered access is a rare treat for anyone who appreciates beauty and culture to enjoy.
Did you know?
Today, there are around 300 geisha who keep the tradition alive.
