I just saw this heart warming film at the VC Film Festival. Hula Girls set in a dreary coal mining town in Northern Japan in the 60s. The town is threatened to go under if the coal mine closes affecting the lives of the hard working miners and their families. A plan is hatched to open up a Hawaii center to attract tourists and provide jobs. Young women are recruited to provide entertainment as hula dancers and a professional dance instructor is brought in along with her big city values. And even though the small town doesn’t embrace their dream, it’s up to this small group to save the town. This story of friendship, commitment and the human spirit is sure to touch your heart.
The film stars Yasuko Matsuyuki, Etsushi Toyokawa and Yu Aoi and features a beautiful soundtrack by ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro.
I don’t know if it will make a theatrical run, so look for it on DVD in the future.
