Last Saturday I had a chance to hang with artists Ogi and Yoskay Yamamoto at project: gallery in Culver City.  It was a rare chance to meet Ogi, who after living for a while in Northern California, has relocated back to Tokyo.  It was cool chatting with Ogi; we talked about Takashi Murakami and how his generation is different from Murakami’s.  I told him about Tokyo a la Mode and he was trippin’ on some pictures of American lolita girls and jrock kids I had on my camera.  We also talked about how Japanese pop art pulls a lot from traditional culture.  After that, it didn’t leave me much time to speak with Yoskay, but I did say hi.

“in a foreign land” show is currently playing at project:

Here are some other shows:

“Banzai/Godzilla: Japanese Influences in American Culture Then and Now” on display at the San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art (SFMOMA) until July 27, 2007.

World X Shibuya at the James Gray Gallery in Santa Monica through July 29.

Ninja Show 2 (Revenge of the Ninja) August 11 - September 3 , 2007 at Nucleus Gallery in Alhambra, CA.  This show, at one of my favorite LA stores, will feature over 50 artists.  Come dressed as a ninja!

Mr., a protege of Takashi Murakami, recently had a show at the Lehmann Maupin gallery in New York.  The show is over now, but the website is worth a look.  (click on “Past” and choose “Mr.")
