Kokeshi are traditional wooden dolls that are painted to look like a girl wearing a kimono.  Christina Conway of San Diego, CA came up with a great idea to get a bunch of different artists to paint their own wooden dolls for a kokeshi art show.

“The reason I want to share the Kokeshi project with as many people as possible is multi-fold: Celebrate living artists and push their boundaries, recognize another culture that has greatly influenced today’s art and toy design world, and to bring non-traditional viewers of art together...” You can read an interview with Christina and the Kokeshi project on her blog.

The show is at the Subtext Gallery in San Diego and runs through Dec. 17.
