The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

I first found out about this film at the San Francisco International Asian Film Festival but couldn’t make the screening. Then I skipped the lone LA screening because I got lazy. It turns out this movie is pretty good and now I have to wait for the next chance to see it. Hopefully there are plans for wider distribution beyond film festivals, otherwise I’m going to have to develop my own power to go back in time to watch this film.
The story is pretty much what the title says. A girl, Makoto, has the power to jump back in time and uses it to make her life easier, but actually results in making her relationships more complicated.
The animated film is based on a novel by scifi author Yasutaka Tsutsui, who also penned the original story for the soon to be released Paprika. It was previously made into a popular live action film and tv series. Called Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo in Japanese, the animated version was directed by Mamoru Hosoda and went on to win Animation of the Year at the Japan Academy Awards.
If you really can’t wait to see it and don’t have your own time-slipping ability, the DVD has already been released in Japan.
