Tomomi Kunishige paints with a calligraphy brush in a traditional art called shodo--the writing of Chinese characters in black ink.
Tomomi invented a style called “ei kanji” where at first glance you see the kanji character but upon closer inspection, you can see the corresponding letters from the English alphabet written into the picture. For example, she draws the character “ai” and inside you can see the letters l,o,v and e. “Ai” is “love” in Japanese.
Besides creating beautiful art, Tomomi has a cool fashion style. You can see both her “ei kanji” art and stylish photos of the artist in the book, “Kunishige TomomixEi Kanji” (國重友美×英漢字).
You can find the book at Kinokuniya bookstores as well as the Japan Amazon site.
