If you’ve lived in Japan then you are already familiar with the Uniqlo brand.  It’s been called the Gap of Japan.  Lots of solid colors and plenty of safe to wear casual styles and all at very afforable prices.  So while we may not agree with the vanilla approach to mass-produced corporate fashion, you gotta admit, they do have a good marketing department in shaping their image as hip and artsy.

Case in point is the Uniqlo Mixplay video featuring Japanese robot dancers in Uniqlo gear.

And for the launch of the Uniqlo USA flagship store in Soho NYC back in November 2006, they featured the Japan Pop Culture T-shirt Project, an exhibit featuring T-shirts designed by forty artists, including Yayoi Kusama, Nobuyoshi Araki and Takashi Honma.  Another collaboration is the Designers Invitation Project where a handful of designers such as Phillip Lim and Alice Roi were asked to bring some high style into Uniqlo retail stores.  All pretty cool stuff.

So we’re torn, Uniqlo yes or Uniqlo no?  What do you think?

Sidebar: The name Uniqlo is a Japanese combo of the words “Unique” and “Clothing.”
