Beard Papa

In Japan, the word for “cream puffs” is “shu cream”.  While the word is lost in translation, the taste most definitely is not.  Beard Papa is a dessert chain that specializes in cream puffs.  Their stores are often located in crowded train stations and there are usually long lines of women waiting to bring home a box of the tasty pastry.

Beard Papa came to America a couple years ago, first in New York, and now they are growing like a Smurf colony across the nation.  Locations include Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco and Honolulu.

The best way to enjoy a Beard Papa shu cream, err, cream puff, is to go out for dinner, then visit a local Beard Papa for dessert.  But you will probably end up bringing a box home, they’re that good.  A box of Beard Papa cream puffs also makes an excellent gift.

Vanilla is the main flavor, but you can also get chocolate.  Other flavors include green tea, strawberry and pumpkin, but they are not always available.  Enjoy!

For more information and to find a Beard Papa near you, visit their website.

Beard Papa welcomes you to his magical bakery.

One of Beard Papa’s little helpers injects the creamy goodness into the pastry shell.

This cream puff was gone soon after the picture was taken, may it rest in peace in my belly.

Ah. Beard Papa’s. My college friends and I come down to the one on Sawtelle in West Los Angeles, just off the 405, exit Santa Monica (since the normal exit Olympic and Pico is closed for now).

Sawtelle itself is a great Japanese community with lots of cute shops and restaurants, so having a Beard Papas there is the perfect place to end an evening of yummy dinner, some boba and this yummy dessert. It makes great studying food too. ^_^

I had some when I went on vacation to Hawaii.
They were really good, but I gotta say, they smellt like wet dog.

I think “shu cream” comes from the French word, “chou cream.” “Chou” means “cabbage” in French; I think the idea is that the cream puff looks sort of cabbage-y in shape but has creamy wonder inside. Nevertheless....tabetai! Will have to check it out in NYC.
